Can’t catch me!
We have been going to the beach more often this Summer. And one game Lily Melody, enjoys is “can’t catch me!” I like that she takes off along the sand laughing and expects me to run after her. And I do. I used to run a lot, but I haven’t done much over the past decade. So being a 55-year-old Dad to a 4-year-old girl who wants to play games that involve running on soft sand requires some preparation on my part. Thankfully my general health is ok, though I could drop a few kilos. Having a Vietnamese wife who always cooks enough yummy kai for an extra two people, I feel it’s my duty to eat on their behalf, just to be polite.

Lily Melody is ready to go home after playing at Wainui beach all afternoon.
Going to the gym
I often consider joining a gym, but the cost of membership and the need for military-like-consistency always put me off. But I recognise and physically feel the need to do regular exercise. I’m active and not a lazy person. At home I do some stretching in the attempt to maintain some flexibility especially in my hips, legs, and back. But if I want to keep up with my girl, I need to do more than touch my toes.
Squats to skipping
When I used to be a regular gym goer, I loved doing squats. I would do 5 sets of 10 reps of 120kg, usually twice sometimes three times a week. Not spectacular, but it worked for me, I felt great. Squats and the rowing machine for cardio were my favourites.
Now I’m thinking of taking up skipping. From memory skipping should be intense enough to get me started on my journey of becoming fit for play.
Wish me luck!
